Brutalism comes from the french phrase “béton brute”, meaning “raw concrete”
Brutalism gained popularity after WWII because big cities needed a way to rebuild that was cheap and fast. Steel and concrete were abundant and cheap during that time, so they became the building materials popularly used for this style.
